Yet Another Clinton Is Getting Ready To Run For Office

After Hillary Clinton lost to President-elect Donald Trump in a political upset, many have expected the Clinton’s to recede from the lime light for a bit, possibly retiring all together. However, a new report indicated that Chelsea Clinton is currently being groomed to run for the New York Congressional seat once the current holder, Rep. Nita Lowey, retires.

According to the New York Post, the 79-year-old Lowey will plan to retire the seat she has held for almost 30 years, covering New York City’s 17th Congressional District.

The district covers Rockland, Westchester counties and Chappaqua, where the Clintons currently live. In August, Hillary and Bill Clinton purchased an additional Chappaqua home for Chelsea and her family. The house cost $1.16 million and is next door to her parents’ residence.

“There has been a lot of speculation within New York Democratic circles about Lowey’s retirement and Chelsea running for the seat,” an anonymous source told the Post. “There is a belief that Chappaqua is a logical place for Chelsea to run, because it would be straightforward for her to raise money and build a powerful base.”

Chelsea currently lives in Manhattan; if she wanted to run for the open Congressional seat, she would have to make Chappaqua her official legal residence.

“While it is true the Clintons need some time to regroup after Hillary’s crushing loss, they will not give up,” the source tells the Post. “Chelsea would be the next extension of the Clinton brand…While politics isn’t the life Hillary wanted for Chelsea, she chose to go on the campaign trail for her mother and has turned out to be very poised, articulate and comfortable with the visibility.”

The Daily Mail reports that Chelsea would not only be following in her parents’ footsteps by running for elected office, but also her in-laws, who both held Congressional seats.

Father-in-law Edward Mezvinsky served from 1973 to 1977, while his wife Marjorie held office from 1993 to 1995. However, both of their political careers came to a standstill in 2001, when Edward was convicted of a number of frauds and was imprisoned for five years.

Chelsea Clinton, herself, has recently come under fire after documents released from the hacker group Wikileaks suggest that she paid for part of her wedding with money raised from her parents’ charity organization, the Clinton Foundation, according to the Mail.

A spokesman for Lowey declined to comment if the Congresswoman truly plans to retire. Similarly, a spokesperson for Chelsea has yet to comment if she would run for the open seat.
