A new commemorative $100 gold coin from the U.S. Mint has caused a stir online.

The U.S. Mint announced the 2017 American Liberty 225th Anniversary Gold Coin, featuring Liberty as a black woman, will be released on April 6, the Associated Press reports. On one side is the woman’s head in profile with a crown of stars and the Mint’s founding year, 1792, as well as the year 2017; on the other, an eagle in flight.

It is the first in a series of 24-karat gold coins that will depict Liberty as different ethnicities. Future coins will represent Asian-Americans, Hispanic-Americans, and Indian-Americans.

The goal of the coins is to reflect “the cultural and ethnic diversity of the United States,” the Mint said.

Following the Associated Press’ report, the news outlet received harsh backlash from Conservative social media users because Liberty is portrayed as African-American on the coin, according to Raw Story:

The discrimination of white people by the [Obama] administration continues

Doubt lady liberty talks at top volume in movie theaters

That’s fine. But if they do one with a Latina on it, it better come with papers…

I’m surprised that it’s not a MUSLIM

This administration doing everything to change history, including changing Lady Liberty from what the French sent us. Pathetic racist!

I wouldn’t pay a dime for it. This proves that the Obama’s are racist

There is currently only one U.S. Mint coin in circulation that features a person of color, the Sacagawea dollar, according to CNN. And there is only one with a woman, the Susan B. Anthony dollar.

  1. I think it’s bulshit, and i’m a coin colector, I will not have one for sure!! Our government is going way too far, and i’m sure a lot of people feel the same!!

    • I too am a Numismatist (for the lesser educated readership, that’s a coin collector) & am appalled by the ignorance displayed on this matter by a fellow collector.
Apart from the point made so succinctly by the comment directly below the one I’m quoting, along with the fact that there truly are sectors of white America who honestly feel so threatened by the image of Liberty portrayed in the form of a lady with African Features that they feel the need to attack its inception by attempting to link it to the Obama Administration… I as an Australian find it horrifying.
If you are indeed a coin collector, you would know how many years go into the creation of any given coin, how many act’s of Congress, various laws that need to be met let alone the time involved in the actual design of the coin itself.
I believe that to draw such a tenuous line simply because the outgoing President happens to be the same race as that depicted on the coin speaks volumes of your ignorance & dare say the only reason it won’t be in your collection is because you probably couldn’t afford it anyway!!

      • Not that it is something I would choose to argue about. Lady Liberty was modeled after a roman/Greek woman so leave it be. As far as putting this on Obama you say it takes years he had 8 and he is the one that wanted the $20 and the $5 bill to be changed so I would say this is his doing.

  2. Why is it that after centuries of images of Caucasus role models on TV, movies, sports, and everything else that you are SOO offend that we should have role models of color.

    • Have you watched TV lately all you see is people of color and its been that way for a while now. There are no shows that have nothing but whites but there are all black shows. If a show that was mostly white people made a comment about black people it would be canceled but the mostly black shows ragg on whites all the time how is that fair. Its funny how White people in America have to pay for the past we had nothing to do with but get no credit for all that fought to change it. Thousands of white people died freeing slaves all over the world and some of our ancestors were slaves also. Just another attempt to divide us and the sad part is people will fall for it.

  3. Wow once again..we the people of all races and colors .and freedom..is what keeps this country.going. so what if they put a black women on a coin..no body said you have.like it …but think about it all those blacks Mexicans and Chinese.people do all the work that the lazy was white man won’t do !!!!shit I thought slavery!! Was a thing in the past ..thats right I collect coins and I’m white …ps what’s wrong with you stupid humans ..get a life

      • The first comment was meant for someone else. To answer your question what’s wrong with stupid people… You are calling white people lazy you may be lazy but I worked hard my whole life I served as a Paratrooper when I got out I did what I needed to pay my bills dig ditches, shoveled sh**, whatever I had to do. I never received white privileges cause they don’t exist. Green is the color that matters. Don’t believe me ask OJ he got away with murder when he had money but went to jail for stealing his own stuff when he was broke. You may be a lazy white person but It is not your color that made you lazy it was your upbringing.

  4. Its beautiful. Didn’t the French send the U S a black statue of liberty and the U S sent it back. Looks like nothings changed.

  5. This is a load of crap and a bogus article. Things like this don’t even make the news. There has been no uproar, no outcry, no anger. 98.9 percent of our country probably don’t have any idea about this new coin and couldn’t care less. Just another liberal left stab to make our people look like a bunch of racially biased and hateful rabble. I hope the rest of the world isn’t buying into all this crap.

  6. Minor point: Sacagawea was female, so two coins with actual human females (not counting all the Liberty themes). Just seemed kind of stupid to me to only identify Sacagawea by her skin color and then say Susan B. was the only female ever.
