Mike Amoroso, 70, loves staying in shape – and sharing his political views. He was working out at Planet Fitness in Orange City, Florida, in a shirt that read, ‘Abortion Kills a Person,’ when one of the staff members approached him.
“She told me: ‘I am very sorry. We have someone who is not happy with your shirt. Someone is offended by your shirt,’” Amoroso said. “I said, ‘You know, I wear them all the time.’ She said, ‘You’ll have to leave,’ and I said, ‘Okay, I’ll leave,’ and I left.”
Amoroso was worried that the violent language of his shirt contributed to his removal from the gym. The next day, he wore a yellow shirt emblazoned with the logo ‘Pray to End Abortion.’ Again, a staff member at Planet Fitness told Amoroso that another customer complained about his wardrobe and that he would have to change or leave.
Amoroso has nothing against women who choose an abortion, but said he’d like for a time to come when abortion is no longer necessary. He has a large collection of anti-abortion shirts. Amoroso said he can understand why people are offended, but believes his shirts are a freedom-of-speech issue.
He hopes that his wardrobe choices and the controversy they’ve created will help start a conversation about abortion. When asked if the offense people took to the shirts would make him reconsider his clothing, he replied, “No, I might wear them more.” Amoroso isn’t happy he offended someone in the process of starting a dialogue.
