One teenage boy in Georgia captured hearts nationwide after being spotted helping an elderly woman.
Connie Belle Jenkins Sweet recalls watching her nephew, high school senior Senquavious Driver, approach the 81-year-old woman near the Dollar General store, AWM reports.
“We were about to pull off and leave when she was trying to get out of her car, but she was struggling to get on the sidewalk. She barely could walk,” Sweet recalls.
That’s when Senquavious did something that shocked her.
“He helped her in the store and shopped with her and he walked her back out to her car,” Sweet said. “She was only going in for a soda, but she barely could even get in the store.”
Sweet said she felt incredibly touched and proud.
“I was in tears taking pictures because he didn’t hesitate to help her, and that made my heart happy,” Sweet said. “I’m so proud of him because I know and love the lady that raised him, my sissy.”
The incident went viral, with many praising the boy for his good deed.
“I love stories like this,” wrote one man on AWM’s Facebook page. “What an awesome guy, and still so young. He should be proud, his parents should be proud, and he should know how proud everyone else is that there are still young people like him that perform acts of kindness out of love and empathy. MY HERO OF THE DAY!”
For some, the fact that somebody shared this story moved them for even deeper reasons.
Senquavious — who is African American — seems to shatter harmful stereotypes in a time of increased racial tensions.
“I cannot wait until society looks at color as a means of seeing where a person’s ancestors originated from and recognize character as a way a person has been raised,” one woman wrote. “This young man was raised very well. He is a future leader who took a stand and helped a woman in need. Great job young man.”
