A Pennsylvania charter high school teacher was charged with sex crimes after authorities say they caught her with a male student in a car in early July.
Katie Cross, 31, a teacher at the Collegium Charter School in Exton, Pennsylvania, was approached by police on July 1 after a resident from East Bradford complained about seeing two people engaged in an “intimate encounter” in her car. The resident saw a woman straddling a man in the front passenger seat, reports Daily Local News.
West Chester police arrived at the scene and found Cross with a 17-year-old. Cross told officers the teenager was her student. Cross allegedly met with the student on more than one occasion, reports WCAU. The teenager also told police he and Cross have had a physical relationship since February, and have kissed many times in school.
Residents say the student-teacher relationship would not be secret for long, given the small community.
“When we see cars parked out here, we know who’s there,” Karen Griffin told WCAU. “Everybody in this neighborhood knows everybody else.”
After Cross’ arrest, the school issued a statement on the steps it was taking in the matter:
“The teacher…has been suspended until further notice.Collegium is fully cooperating with the West Chester Police Department and the Chester County District Attorney’s office. The school takes the safety and well-being of our children extremely seriously.”
Cross’ charges include institutional sexual assault, unlawful contact with a minor, corruption of minors and endangering the welfare of children, reports The Huffington Post.
