An Arkansas father put up a handmade sign on his lawn to protect his 16-year-old daughter from a man he deemed a child molester.
Shelton Kitchens told WREG that he was shocked to learn his 16-year-old daughter was in a sexual relationship with a 21-year-old man.
“I find my daughter like she’s almost eaten alive. It’s sickening when you raise her shirt and look at it. Hickeys all over,” he said. “She got lured in by puppies.”
Kitchens reported the man to the St. Francis County Sheriff’s Office, but authorities told him that they could not file criminal charges.
“He called Crimes Against Children in Little Rock. They said they can’t do nothing about it because she’s 16 years old,” he said. The age of consent in Arkansas was, in fact, his daughter’s age.
Rather than rely on police to do something, Kitchens put up the sign – which read “Danger! Child molester lives in first house on the right.” Below it, the man’s last name is listed.
“I want awareness put to other parents so they don’t have to go through what I’ve gone through the last few days,” he said, adding that he hoped his sign helped to get lawmakers to raise the age of consent to 18.
“It’s going viral. That’s what we want it to do,” Marcus Rickman, who owns a tire shop with Kitchens, said.
Many readers called for Kitchens to go even further in exposing the man for his relationship with his daughter.
“Much better if the father got a snap shot of that guy’s photo enlarge it and include it to his large sign! Keep reminding your teen girls, lot of guys are sexual, predator they couldn’t know which one until it’s too late. There’s lesser risk if they come home early, tell where they are going ( exact place) and for what reason, which friends they are with,’ one Mad World News reader commented on the site’s Facebook page.
Others called for further investigation before labeling the man a child molester, considering the seriousness of such a title.
“What if it turned out the girl wasn’t telling the truth about who it was but trying to protect a boy friend? what if some of these horrible things were done to an innocent person. Dna needs to be done to see if his sperm matches the sperm in her. It would not be right to do all those things if the man were not the guilty party but if he was then the whole town needs to stand together in helping the parents. At 16 the girl is old enough to know better but may have been to scared to say no. But if she was all for it then she to is guilty. A guy at 22 is probably no more mature mentally than the 16 year old girl according to reports I’ve read about males maturing a lot slower than females do,” one reader wrote.
