A mother sent her 3-year-old child to kindergarten with a slice of chocolate cake as part of the child’s lunch. The child’s teacher then sent the mother a note, criticizing her for putting cake in the child’s lunch box.

“Your child has chocolate slice from the Red Food category today,” the note says, reports Good Housekeeping. “Please choose healthier options for Kindy.” The term “kindy” is used in Australia for kindergarten.

According to Hello Giggles, the “Red Food” list is a category of food the Australian government recommends children not eat regularly. It includes soda, deep-fried foods and sugary juices. Schools throughout the country refer to the list as part of their nutrition guidelines.

When the child returned home with the note, a friend of the child’s mother, Melinda Tankard Reist, an author and women’s rights advocate, posted a response to her Facebook page.

“My friend (mother of 8 healthy children, what follows relating to no. 7) received this today from her 3 year old’s kindy,” Reist began. “I told her to put in two slices tomorrow and tell them to get lost.”

“Mothers have enough to deal with, without the embarrassment of a note being sent home like they have just ruined their child’s life,” one Facebook user commented. “Please pick up the phone and talk to the parent or speak to them when you drop them off/pick them up. As educators I’d expect more tact. This would cause much more distress and judgement over a slice of cake.”

Not all parents agree with Reist. Another parent commented on the post, “My kids’ Elem school had the same kind of rules,” she began. “I obeyed them. They ate what they wanted at home.”

  1. The teachers are their to teach thats it. You want to tell the parents what to pack for their children. Then you take your money and you pay for their lunch. Teachers when you start paying for my kids clothes, their food and all their school supplies. Then and only then, i might let you ask my nicely what to feed my child. Other than that mind your own business and do the job your paid todo. TEACH

    • I agree whole hardily on this aspect. If the child is healthy and not obese it should not be the teacher or any school administrative’s duty to dictate as to what the child’s parent packs in their lunch. The teachers are there to give our children and education. We pay taxes to the schools in the state of which we live of which is/should be used to pay the teachers. It’s bad enough that the parents have to buy school supplies seemingly for the entire classroom. So teachers and administrators should keep their business out of what a parent packs in their child lunch.
