Melania Trump’s dress on New Year’s Eve sparked controversy in comparison to dresses worn by First Lady Michelle Obama, and garnered backlash toward designer Dolce and Gabbana.
Trump was pictured on New Year’s Eve at her husband’s Florida estate, wearing a black dress with jewel brooches on the shoulders. It was met with praise by people who felt she dressed classier than Obama.
Others, however, expressed their disappointment with the designers’ decision to dress the wife of President-elect Donald Trump, a controversial political figure who has been a divisive figure throughout his political campaign.
“You should know stefano that OUR election has torn apart our country,” an angry follower of Stefano Gabbana commented in response to Trump’s dress. “If it were Mrs Reagan, Bush or Obama (either party) no one on either side would mind. But this is offensive to the core.”
Other designers, like Marc Jacobs, have declined to dress the incoming first lady as a result of her husband’s controversial policies and rhetoric.
“Personally, I’d rather put my energy into helping out those who will be hurt by [Donald] Trump and his supporters,” Jacobs said of dressing Melania, The Telegraph reported.
