A Brooklyn jury convicted a 20-year-old local man for raping and assaulting an 82-year-old woman after breaking into her home in Brighton Beach, New York, in July 2015.

Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez stated that criminal Asa Robert was convicted on Dec. 12 of first-degree rape and first-degree criminal sexual act, which add to his recent early December conviction of first-degree sexual abuse, second-degree assault, first-degree burglary, first-degree robbery, second-degree burglary and two counts of second-degree criminal trespass.

“This defendant committed a reprehensible and terrifying assault on a vulnerable elderly woman who had the courage to face her attacker in court,” Gonzalez said in a statement following the reading of the jury’s verdict, the Daily Mail reports. “This defendant has now been brought to justice and held accountable for his actions.”

Robert could face up to 122 years in prison when he is sentenced on Jan. 10.

The attacker, who was 18 at the time, had broken into the senior citizen’s home on July 13, 2015, as she was sweeping her front yard. The victim recounted for the jury how Robert attacked her when she went to lay down, held her by the neck, pushed her onto her bed and threatened her with a knife he was holding.

“He started to yell, ‘Gimme the money,'” she stated, New York Daily News reports. “I said, ‘I’m a poor old lady, my family handles all my money.'”

The widow, who is not being named to protect her identity as a victim of sexual assault, said Robert shoved clothes into a bag and stole various items from her home.

As the thief was heading to the door, the widow told the court he suddenly turned back and ordered her into the bedroom. There, he raped, sodomized and suffocated the then 82-year-old woman, despite her multiple pleas to stop and call 911.

“This was the most disgusting thing that has ever happened to me,” she told the jury of the attack. “He was on top of me like a pile of bricks. It felt like he was trying to crush me to death.”

The woman said Robert assaulted her for four hours and would not stop “no matter what I said.”

After the rape stopped, she said Robert brought her some water and her medical alert button.

Once Robert left the property, the victim notified her son-in-law who called police to her house. But it was not about a week later that the widow was able to tell her daughter about the rape.

The police searched for the perpetrator for four days through multiple homes in Brooklyn. He was ultimately found hiding in the kitchen of a private home in Bedford Stuyvesant.

Robert’s past criminal record indicates the young man was arrested at least eight times, including for gang assault, robbery and resisting arrest.
