Anti-Trump protesters were pepper-sprayed in a clash with police on the eve of President Donald Trump’s inauguration.

Hundreds of anti-Trump demonstrators stood outside the National Press Club, which was hosting the DeploraBall — an “alt-right” inaugural celebration event, on the night of Jan. 19, the Daily Mail reports.

Crowd members were holding signs and chanting their disapproval of the incoming president.

A Trump supporter who came in contact with the protest, but did not attend the National Press Club ball, claimed he was the victim of violence by the protesters. He accused one of them of striking him with a flagpole.

“I was wearing my ‘Make America Great Again’ hat, and a white male came up behind me and swung at me with a flagpole — I kind of blacked out for a minute,” said James Allsup, 21, Fox News reports.

“Before I knew it my head was gushing blood — there’s blood on my Trump hat.”

Allsup posted a picture to Facebook of himself holding out an allegedly bloody hand, but the reported injury to his head is not visible.

The young fan of Trump, who regularly posts anti-left memes, added a caption to the posted image reading: “Remember that this is what happens when you disagree with the ‘tolerant left.'”

The demonstrators said they have not been violent.

Video recordings collected by protesters show the anti-Trump crowd reacting to pro-Trump followers.

A pop-up protest sprung up in the capital as demonstrators sought to stand outside the Trump International Hotel on Jan. 19.

A group of around 200 protesters swung a banner dubbing the new administration as “fascist” and “illegitimate” and chanted “Let us through” and “the whole world is watching” as they marched toward the hotel.

Participants of the protest broke through barricades placed outside the hotel but left the scene peacefully after momentarily chanting “No KKK. No fascist USA”.

Riot police monitored the street and at about 9 p.m. they sought to control the crowd with chemical spray as guests leaving an inaugural event complained they were having trash thrown at them, The Washington Post reports.

One of the demonstrators stated the protest was part of a general resistance movement that will take place over the next four years, CNN reports.

“This is to build up momentum and mobilize people so that whatever s*** is coming down the pipe with Trump and [Vice President Mike] Pence — their regime — we need to be ready,” 26-year-old Sarko Sarkodie said.

“The alt-right’s vision for this country is not the one that we need. I’m out here tonight because I want to be part of the resistance efforts happening this week, and the resistance that’ll be happening the next four years.”

No arrests from that incident have been made, said a Metropolitan Police Department representative.

More protests are expected over inauguration weekend in Washington, D.C.
