Delta Pilot Immediately Lands Plane After Takeoff Because Of Just One Passenger

A Delta pilot learned that a family missed the flight and would then miss their father’s funeral, prompting him to turn his plane around so they could make the flight.

Rick Short was traveling with his family from Arizona to attend his father’s funeral in Tennessee. The family needed to get on a connecting flight in Minneapolis, but their original flight was delayed by 90 minutes — giving them just 10 minutes to make the connecting flight, KSAZ reported.

As it turned out, it wasn’t enough time for the family to make it. By the time they got to the gate, the doors were locked and the plane was about to take off. The plane was the last flight to Memphis that day and the funeral was the following morning.

“The lady got on the phone and said there was nothing they could do, that the tower wasn’t going to let them pull back in and my sisters and mom … sitting there in tears and I’m screaming through the glass,” Short told KSAZ.

Short banged on the glass, cried and screamed to try and get the pilot’s attention.

“All of a sudden, another phone call,” Short said.

The pilot said he saw Short in the window and could see the desperation on his face. He ultimately decided to turn the plane around and let the family board.

The family got on the flight and was able to attend the service for Short’s father, who had died from cancer. They would not have been able to say goodbye had it not been for the pilot’s compassion.

“It’s very rare … someone stops and does something so kind and we need more people like that in the world,” Short said.
