A Middletown, Ohio, husband who thought his relationship with his estranged wife was civil learned the shocking truth about his wife’s intentions when she was arrested for hiring a hit man to kill him (video below).

Tony Carter was shocked when police revealed to him that his wife had paid a hit man to kill him. The 42-year-old father and his wife, Shelly, separated after a tumultuous marriage that involved incidents including her destroying his car and setting his mother’s car on fire.

“She was self-centered. And it was all about Shelly. If things weren’t her way, she’d go out of her way to make it her way,” Tony’s father, TJ, told WLWT.

Shelly Carter, WLWT reported, started planning to have her husband killed late last year. The hit man had a change of heart, however, when he realized that the couple’s two children might be in the car at the time of the murder.

The plan was for Carter to be killed in a “car accident” after dropping off his kids at school.

Shelly, court documents stated, wasn’t concerned about whether or not her two sons would have to be killed as well.

“They were in her way. She’d have to take care of the kids, she didn’t have time to take care of kids,” TJ Carter said. The boys are 7 and 11 years old.

Shelly Carter was arrested and ultimately admitted to plotting her husband’s murder, while the hit man turned himself in.

Since the terrifying incident, Carter said he has been leaning on God and focusing on his role as a dad.

“The Lord wasn’t ready for me to go. There… was a reason that guy turned himself in I believe,” he said.

The story quickly went viral, with many expressing their disbelief that the woman might only get a short prison sentence.

“It defies imagination that she only gets maybe 8 year behind bars when she didn’t care if her kids were hurt too. She is a monster,” one Newsiosity reader commented on the site’s Facebook page.
