A convenience store in New Mexico has come under fire for controversial signs the owner routinely puts up in the window.
People who visit the Mayhill Convenience Store are likely to see signs expressing disdain for President Barack Obama. For example, one such sign reads “Obama and other Muslims not welcome here,” according to the Miami Herald. Another features an image of a noose and includes the words “Obama swing set.”
Former employee Marlon McWilliams explained to KOB that the owner is known to ban customers who disagree with him from his store.
“It’s been here a long time,” McWilliams said. “If you go in there and you offend him, you can’t go in there no more. He turns lots of people away.”
McWilliams worked at the store years ago, but says the signs are still essentially the same.
“They weren’t the same ones, but they were similar,” he said, adding that the owner “sells those signs to people who come through and stop and read them.”
The store’s owner has also taken aim at NFL player Colin Kaepernick, who made headlines for refusing to stand during the national anthem before games. According to Mic.com, one sign read: “Colin Kaeper-dick, you overpaid half-breed: Take your millions and go back to Africa.”
In response to the store’s reported anti-Muslim policy, the Council on American-Islamic Relations has issued a statement asking the owner to take down the offending sign.
“While everyone has the First Amendment right to free speech — even offensive speech — we urge the store’s owner to remove the sign in the interest of common decency and of our nation’s unity at a time of increasing divisions,” CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper said.
The store is currently up for sale, according to KOB. The owner, who did not respond to requests for comment, is asking $359,000.
