Because many people are unaware of what a clam looks like in motion, the video quickly spread online after it piqued the curiosity of millions.
The video above shows a clam eating salt from the table and it likely looks a bit different from how you’d expect that to look. The clam’s “tongue” emerges from the shell and licks up the salt.
Miriam Goldstein, a biologist from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, has an interesting explanation of what’s happening in the video, according to Newsiosity. She says it isn’t actually a tongue which emerges from the clam’s shell and that the clam is likely trying to understand and adapt to its environment.
“It’s probably trying to place a dig,” Goldstein explained. “I doubt the salt has anything to do with it.”
As you can see, the clam was not able to dig into the table, but the results are still fascinating.
Viewers on YouTube shared their own thoughts and reactions in the comments section of the video.
“That’s its foot and that’s how it digs to hide the it’s scared, that’s the clam trying to escape so it doesn’t die,” one user wrote.
“One question though,” another user commented. “WTF WAS THAT. CLAMS CAN MOVE? THIS IS NEW TO ME.”
