Following Meryl Streep’s controversial speech at the Golden Globe awards in which the actor criticized President-elect Donald Trump, many celebrities jumped to her defense. One celebrity isn’t going that far: Denzel Washington.
In a recent roundtable interview with The Hollywood Reporter, which also included actor Mel Gibson, Washington spoke to the perception that acting is a difficult job that requires a certain amount of hard work.
“Oh the difficulty of making a movie. Send your son to Iraq, that’s difficult. It’s just a movie. It’s like, relax. I don’t play that precious nonsense. Your son got shot in the face? That’s difficult. Making a movie is a luxury,” he said in the roundtable, QPolitical reported.
“It’s an opportunity, and most importantly, it’s a gift. Obviously, everybody here is talented enough to do that, but don’t get it twisted. It’s just a movie. It ain’t that big a deal.”
Many viewers praised Washington for his statement.
“Thank you Denzel for your stance on the real issues in America,” one reader commented on QPolitical’s Facebook page. “Not sure why she wanted to interrupt a fun evening with HER opinion on politics but was very rude to put a damper on the evening,”
“Denzel is a great human being with a great heart,” another said. “I think he puts life and the things he values in perspective. I have always loved him in his movies he puts his all into them. Keep up the good work and God bless you.”
Others shared their own stories of true sacrifice and hard work to back up the actor’s statement.
“I can attest to the gut wrenching feeling of your loved one going to Afghanistan,” one reader commented. “My husband and son in law both have been deployed multiple times. Every time the doorbell rings or a car pulls up in front of your house unexpected you get sick to your stomach. Not hearing from them for weeks and then get a call that they have been blown up. How dare any over paid actor say what they do is hard work.”
“I love you Denzel always have you are a great actor and caring human being that does put things in perspective and where they truly belong,” another added. “God Bless your family and may you always have God in your heart and life Denzel he has never steered anyone wrong and of course you know this , I wish others thought like you the world would be such a better beautiful place.”
