A Las Vegas baby died on May 8 after being mauled by the family dog.

Kamiko Dao Tsuda-Saelee, who was 6 months old, was playing at home in her walker when the family’s pit bull suddenly began biting her, reports the Daily Mail.

Her mother, Layla Tsuda, was able to stop the attack, but it was too late. Kamiko suffered blunt force trauma to the head and was pronounced dead at a local hospital soon after.

Hawaii native Tsuda said she went to the bathroom for a minute and came back to find the dog mauling her little girl, reports KHON. “I have no words to explain my pain,” she said in a statement to the station.

The dog, Mana, had been in their family for nine years and had never bitten anyone before, she said, emphasizing that Mana had always been considered to be a good family pet.

After the fatal attack, the Clark County Animal Control took Mana into custody and euthanized him the following day.

“The owner surrendered the dog to the County … A dog that has attacked and killed a person would not be allowed to be adopted,” a statement from the County read.

Police said the dog attack appeared to be a tragic accident and no charges were expected to be brought against the family.

According to the National Pit Bull Victim Awareness organization, pit bulls “are more likely to bite people than any other breed of dog … Reports from cities across the U.S. show that pit bulls have consistently bitten people at least twice as much as the next highest type of dog…. With an increase in pit bull attacks of 830 percent in the past 7 years, pit bulls are one of the biggest public safety issues in America today.”

A contrary view is offered by Pit Bull Rescue Central, which contends that “Pit bulls are wonderful, loving animals that deserve the chance to have a good life,” while noting that their disposition ranges from “destroying your new couch if left home alone” or “climbing into your lap to shower you with kisses.”

The organization also clarifies the terminology regarding the animal:

First, it is important to know that Staffordshire Terrier and ‘Pit Bull’ are not official breeds, but rather common terms used to describe a certain type of dog … For the average Pit Bull owner, however, these distinctions are not really relevant. As a general rule, dogs of these breeds tend to have stable and loving temperaments.

  1. I feel that the fact that the statement that “Pit bulls are more likely to bite people than any other breed” is very suspect considering that it was made by people calling themselves “The National Pit Bul Victum Awareness Org.” says volumes right there. These people are looking for just this kind of tragic event in order to vilify Pitbulls in general. Where did they get their information? because all the info I have heard rates Pitbulls near the top of the scale for stable temperment.
I think the police were vorrect in calling it a tragic accident. That said no one should ever leave a newborn alone with any dog.

  2. I have to “pitbulls” and I’ve had the one in my family for over 10 years and I trust my dogs so much with my children and grandchildren. But in the sense of being a dog owner I would never leave any dog alone with an infant because it can pull its tail its ear anything and set a dog off. It doesn’t matter what kind of dog what type of dog what breed of dog it will set them off to where they will bite. People are confused and misinformed when it comes to pit bulls staff shire Terriers red nose blue nose pit bulls and any other big-headed type of dog. All dogs should be considered dangerous when it comes to leaving a baby infant child alone with a dog. Chihuahuas are one of the worst ankle-biting vicious child biting dogs they are the worst for biting children but do you hear that in the media and no you do not
